The Future Lies in Africa

mfm future at work, University of Bonn | Lisa Biber-Freudenberger, Vincent Moseti, Juliet Wanjiku Kamau, Gabin Kouévi Ananou, Detlef Müller-Mahn

The future is a battlefield of hopes and fears, competing interests and expectations.

Confronted by multiple overlapping crises, we have to acknowledge that the future cannot be taken for granted, and that it may even come as a complete surprise.

Living with uncertainty is a common experience in large parts of the African continent, where climate change, rapid social transformation, and economic disruptions present major challenges for future-making. The session presents some highlights of joint research projects in collaboration between the university of Bonn and African partners.

It addresses the following questions: How do African futures become accessible in collaborative scientific research? What characterizes the possibilities and probabilities of African futures? What can we learn from African experiences in regard to future-making practices?
